LAC: Launch of Civic Education Videos

“Every so often, in the midst of chaos, you come across an amazing, inexplicable instance of civic responsibility.”

― Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus

On the 19th of February 2020, the House Democracy hosted yet another spectacular event. Orchestrated with Hanns Seidel Foundation as well as the project partner Legal Assistance Centre (LAC). The production of the videos was done by the talented members of Legal Assistance Centre as well as Dudley Viall, Robert Scott and Courage the Comedian who played a big role in bringing the message across.

The purpose of the event was to launch their new Youtube videos addressing civic education and issues around it such as Elections, Rule of Law and the Branches of Government. The Legal Assistance Centre noticed the disconnect between youth and politics and as a solution to that they produced three bite size videos that can be excessed on their website.

The method in which these videos were created is that Courage the Comedian is used as a medium that acts as a light-hearted perspective concerning a topic that is rather unappealing.

The opportunity was also used to announce that LAC the videos would be found on their Youtube channel and where a multitude of others will be posted and made available to the public. Down the pipeline the organisation plans on uploading translations of the videos in order to appeal to a broader group from different backgrounds with different ethnicities. A great example of how the videos served a purpose would be the fact that they were used during the Civic Education programme supported by Namibia Institute of Democracy.

In conclusion the goal is directly linked with the potential of this project. The potential that this initiative holds is endless and as previously mentioned it contributes towards solving day to day problems which stem from the lack of knowledge. Essentially becoming an informed citizen will only be to everyone’s benefit, because people will be speaking from a place of being informed as well as making well thought out decisions. And who better to act as a catalyst than Legal Assistance Centre that embodies qualities of producing qualitative content that serves a purpose.

The LAC videos are also available on the HSF website.
